Baba Suwe makes surprise appearance at Gov. Mimiko's Second Term Declaration

Governor Segun Mimiko’s declaration for a second term last Wednesday was a gathering of diverse sorts with different strokes
It was a tough job getting the Nollywood actor,  Babatunde Omidina popularly known as Baba Suwe into the newly built Democracy Park in Akure, Ondo State last Wednesday. Escorted by his Nollywood colleague, Jibola Dabo, the two thespians were visibly stressed by the overflowing cheer and enthusiasm of the crowd who pushed and shoved the security men as they made every effort to catch a glimpse of the celebrities seated inside the SUV that snaked towards the gate of the Democracy Park. The pair were in Akure for Governor Segun Mimiko’s formal declaration for a second term in office on the ticket of the Labour Party.
The presence of Omidina, Dabo and many other artistes almost gave the occasion away as another celebrity show. There were, however, also many other politically minded men and women including many Yoruba leaders who came to endorse the unprecedented attempt to achieve a second term by the incumbent governor of the Sunshine State. No governor of the new Ondo State has succeeded in achieving a second term in office since the state came into its own in the early nineties.
But last Wednesday in the ambience created by the Nollywood celebrities, musicians and some of the leading politicians from the Southwest, Mimiko and his handlers seemed to have the landmark of a second term in view.Noting that he had not been to Ondo State for nearly ten years, the celebrated actor said he could not find his way when he arrived the day before, noting that the roads were all changed and he had to be guided through. “I saw things like Tinubu Square and in fact, I thought I was in Lagos,” he said to the wide cheer of the crowd.
Other Nollywood celebrities present included Foluke Daramola, Dele Odule. Also present was the prominent Yoruba musician, Adewale Ayuba.

Portsmouth happy to part ways with Kanu

Portsmouth administrator Trevor Birch says he has been “encouraged” by the progress the club have made in their attempts to avoid liquidation following the exit of Kanu from Fratton Park.
Birch has given the club until August 10 to get rid of all their remaining senior players or reach compromise agreements with them.
With Kanu now gone, the side have just three senior players at the club.
“We’ve made encouraging progress,” Birch told BBC Sport.
Administrators PKF also confirmed on Monday that the former Arsenal striker, who has reached the end of his 14-day notice period, is still involved in a dispute over unpaid wages.
Because of that dispute, PKF are now filing a submission to the Football League and are pushing for a hearing to resolve the issue as soon as possible.
Kanu, who has walked out on the final year of his contract, is reportedly claiming up to £3m in periods of unpaid wages since 2006 and Birch has asked for a tribunal to intervene.
In the past week Greg Halford, Erik Huseklepp, David Norris and Luke Varney all left the club, to leave just Dave Kitson, Liam Lawrence and Tal Ben Haim at Fratton Park.
Balram Chainrai’s Portpin and the Pompey Supporters Trust are vying for ownership of the stricken club who will start next season in League One on minus 10 points.

Facts About Bruce Lee

Facts About Bruce Lee
1. Bruce Jun Fan Lee was born in the hour of the Dragon, between 6 and 8 a.m., in the year of the Dragon on November 27, 1940 at the Jackson Street Hospital in San Francisco’s Chinatown.

2. Bruce was the fourth child born to Lee Hoi Chuen and his wife Grace Ho. He had two older sisters, Phoebe and Agnes, an older brother, Peter, and a younger brother, Robert.

3. Bruce’s parents gave him the name “Jun Fan.” Since it is Chinese custom to put the surname first, Bruce’s full name is written Lee Jun Fan.

4. His nickname in the family was “SAI FON,” which literally means Little Peacock. This is a girl’s nickname, but in being applied to Bruce, it had a serious purpose.

5.  Another nickname the family often applied to Bruce was “Mo Si Ting” which means “never sits still” and aptly described his personality.

6. Bruce was also a terrific dancer, and in 1958 he won the Hong Kong Cha Cha Championship.  He studied dancing as assiduously as he did gung fu, keeping a notebook in which he had noted 108 different cha cha steps.

7. “Enter the Dragon” was due to premier at Hollywood’s Chinese theater in August of 1973.Unfortunately, Bruce would not live to see the opening of his film, nor would he experience the accumulated success of more than thirty years of all his films’popularity.

8. Bruce Lee injured his back causing damage to his sacral nerve in 1970. The injury was due to over-lifting during "Good Mornings",a weight training exercise, not during a fight as movies have led people to believe. Although doctors told him he would not be able to continue his lifestyle in the martial arts, through determination he fully recovered and went on to star in four and a half films made between 1971 and 1973.

9. Bruce Lee used the focus glove for martial arts training as far back as 1962.  It was Bruce Lee who popularized its use in the martial arts. Focus gloves are now used by almost every martial artist in the United States.

10. Although Bruce Lee weighed only about 140 lbs.,he trained on a 300 lb. heavy bag to improve his kicking power.

11. Lee was far from being genetically perfect, as some believe. Bruce Lee wore contact lenses and actually failed his physical exam in 1963 and was deemed physically unacceptable by the U.S. Army Draft Board.

12. Bruce Lee was introduced to the football shield for kicking by student Dan Inosanto. At first, he rejected the idea, but within a few days he had developed a series of drills and the kicking shield became a mainstay of Jun Fan Gun Fu Jeet Kune Do training. Today there is a kicking shield of some sort in almost every martial arts school in the USA.

13. Bruce Lee was one of the first Chinese Gung Fu teachers in the United States to teach non-Chinese. Sigung Lee did not allow racial discrimination to enter into his choice of who he wanted to teach. He chose to see people as individuals, and regardless of what the Chinese community at that time wanted he stood his ground, even though he was challenged to fight as an ultimatum to stop teaching people other than those of Chinese decent.

14. Although Bruce Lee started his acting career at age 6 and was known worldwide as an actor, he considered himself a martial artist first and an actor second.

15. Bruce Lee was so fast, he once broke five boards with a speed break on Hong Kong TV, as they were held stacked dangling between his assistant's thumb and forefinger!

16. Bruce was so fast that often, movie directors would ask him to slow down because they could not capture his body movements clearly on film.

The Honey Bee:Amazing Facts

The Honey Bee:Amazing Facts

Agriculture depends greatly on the honeybee for pollination. Honeybees account for 80% of all insect pollination. Without such pollination, we would see a significant decrease in the yield of fruits and vegetables.

1. Honey bees must visit some 2 million flowers to make one pound of honey.

2. Honey bees fly about 55,000 miles to bring in enough nectar to make one pound of honey.

3. About one ounce of honey would fuel a honey bee's flight around the world.

4. Honey bees have been producing honey from flowering plants for about 10-20 million years.

5. The average honey bee worker makes 1/12 teaspoon of honey in her lifetime.

6. Honey bees contribute 8 to 10 billion dollars to the U.S. economy yearly.

7. Honey bees have four wings that are latched into pairs by hooks.

8. There are an estimated 200,000 beekeepers in the United States.

9. Honey bees are the only insects that produce food for humans.

10. The male honey bee, the drone, has a grandfather but no father.

11. The average honey bee flies between 12 and 15 miles per hour.

12. A honey bee flaps its wings about 12,000 times per minute.

13. A honey bee worker visits more than 2,000 flowers on a good day.

14. Honey bees communicate with one another by smell and dances.

15. The average summertime honey bee lives only about 28 to 35 days.

16. There are 3 million plus honey-producing colonies in the United States.

17. A honey bee visits between 50 and 100 flowers during one collection trip.

18. A typical healthy hive may contain up to 60,000 honey bees during peak times.

19. Honey bees make an average of 1,600 round trips in order to produce one ounce of honey.

20. Bees will travel as far as one or two miles from the hive to gather nectar.

21. Honey bees from a typical hive visit approximately 225,000 flowers per day.

22. Queen bees will lay as many as 2,000 eggs on a good day -- an average of one every 45 seconds.

23. A good queen bee will lay between 175,000 and 200,000 eggs per year.

24. The average central temperature of the brood nest is kept between 92 -  95 degrees Fahrenheit.

25. Beeswax production in most hives is only about 1.5% to 2.0% of the honey yield.

26. Approximately eight pounds of honey is eaten by bees to produce one pound of beeswax.

27. The Americas have no native honey bees - early pioneers first brought them from Europe.

28. Honey bees pollinate approximately 25% of all the foods humans consume.

29. Besides honey, honey bees produce wax and propolis, gather pollen, and produce royal jelly.

30. A typical foraging honey bee will work herself to death in about three weeks.

31. Bees collect 66 lbs of pollen per year, per hive.

32. The Honeybee uses pollen as a food.

33. Honey is used by the bees for food all year round.

34. Honey is an easily digestible, pure food.

35. Honey is hydroscopic and has antibacterial qualities.

36. Eating local honey can fend off allergies.

37. Secreted from glands, beeswax is used by the honeybee to build honey comb. It is used by humans in drugs, cosmetics, artists' materials, furniture polish and candles.

38. Propolis is Collected by honeybees from trees, the sticky resin is mixed with wax to make a sticky glue. The bees use this to seal cracks and repair their hive. It is used by humans as a health aid, and as the basis for fine wood varnishes.

39. Royal Jelly: The powerful, milky substance that turns an ordinary bee into a Queen Bee. It is made of digested pollen and honey or nectar mixed with a chemical secreted from a gland in a nursing bee's head. It commands premium prices rivaling imported caviar, and is used by some as a dietary supplement and fertility stimulant. It is loaded with all of the B vitamins.

40. Bee Venom: The "ouch" part of the honeybee. Although sharp pain and some swelling and itching are
natural reactions to a honeybee sting or most, a small percentage of individuals are highly allergic to bee venom. "Bee venom therapy" is widely practiced overseas and by some in the USA to address health problems such as arthritis, neuralgia, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and even Multiple Sclerosis.

41. There is only one queen per hive.

42. The queen mates only once with several male (drone) bees, and will remain fertile for life.

43. She lays up to 2000 eggs per day. Fertilized eggs become female (worker bees) and unfertilized eggs become male (drone bees).

44. All worker bees are female, but they are not able to reproduce.

45. The worker bee has a barbed stinger that results in her death following stinging, therefore, she can only sting once.

46. These male bees are kept on standby during the summer for mating with a virgin queen.
Honey has been delighting humans for over 40 centuries. In ancient Egypt taxes were paid with honey.

47. In early Greece and Rome honey symbolized fertility, love, and beauty. In the Bible this sublime nectar is called "the heavenly food".

48. The practice of honey collection and beekeeping dates back to the stone-age, as evidenced by cave
paintings.

49. Utah is known as the Beehive State.

50. It would take approximately one ounce of honey to fuel a bee's flight around the earth.

51. To make honey, bees drop the collected nectar into the honeycomb and then evaporate it by fanning their wings.

52. Honeybees dance to communicate the direction and distance of nectar sources.

53. The fructose in honey makes it sweeter than sugar. At 21 calories a teaspoon it is one and a half times sweeter than sugar.

54. Honey makes baked goods brown faster, and improves their shelf life.

55. Honey varies in color from almost clear to very dark, depending on the floral source and it's location, as well as the climate.

56. Honeybees are not aggressive by nature, and will not sting unless protecting their hive from an intruder or are unduly provoked.

57. Honeybees represent a highly organized society, with various bees having very specific roles during their lifetime: e.g., nurses, guards, grocers, housekeepers, construction workers, royal attendants, undertakers, foragers, etc.

58. From apples to almonds to the pumpkin in our pumpkin pies, we have bees to thank. Now, a condition known as Colony Collapse Disorder is causing bee populations to plummet, which means these foods are also at risk.

Why Your Body Needs Protein?

Why Your Body Needs Protein?

Why Your Body Needs Protein

Proteins are essential to our health because of the many vital functions that they perform in our bodies. Proteins are large molecules composed of amino acids. Our body requires about 20 amino acids to perform all of its functions. Although we are able to manufacture some of these amino acids from other amino acids, we cannot make nine amino acids and must obtain them from food. When a protein food contains all nine of these “essential” amino acids, it is classified as a complete protein. When a food does not contain adequate quantities of each of these nine amino acids, it is classified as an incomplete protein.
All proteins that come from animal sources, including dairy foods and eggs, are complete proteins.
All proteins that come from plant sources, except for soy, are incomplete proteins. Combining plant proteins is a way to provide adequate quantities of the essential amino acids Here are some of the reasons why we need proteins in our diets:

Proteins Create our Structure
Muscles, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and bone (including our teeth) are composed of collagen, a strong, fibrous protein tissue. Without adequate protein, we would be unable to repair the damage to these tissues that we incur on a daily basis. Children require adequate protein to grow normally.

Supporting Life Functions
Proteins are the primary component of enzymes, molecules that make possible all of the chemical reactions that our bodies perform 24 hours each day. Enzymes are required to digest our food; to create hormones; to produce energy from the food we eat; to clot our blood; and to perform many other essential life functions.

Protection from Illness
Proteins form an essential component of our immune system. Antibodies that protect us from disease are made from proteins.

Transport
Proteins also transport important substances throughout our bodies. An example is hemoglobin, a transport protein that carries oxygen to all of our cells.

Brain Function
Protein is necessary for the production of brain chemicals that support a positive mood, alertness, good memory, concentration, and restful sleep.

5 TIPS IN CHOOSING HEALTHY PROTEIN FOODS

1. Mix it up.
Most reasonable diets provide enough protein for healthy people. Eating a variety of foods will ensure that you get all of the amino acids you need.

2. Go low on saturated fat.
Beans, fish and poultry provide plenty of protein, without much saturated fat. Steer clear of fatty meats and use whole-milk dairy products sparingly. For more information on saturated fat, read “Fats and Cholesterol: Out with the Bad, In with the Good.”

3. Limit red meat—and avoid processed meat.
Research suggests that people who eat more than 18 ounces a week of red meat have a higher risk of colon cancer. So make red meat—beef, pork, lamb—only an occasional part of your diet, if you eat it at all. And skip the processed stuff—bacon, hot dogs, and deli meats—since that’s also been linked to higher cancer risk.

4. Eat soy in moderation.
Tofu and other soy foods are an excellent red meat alternative. But don’t go overboard; 2 to 4 servings a week is a good target. And stay away from supplements that contain concentrated soy protein or extracts, such as isoflavones, as we just don’t know the long term effects.

5. Balance carbs and protein.
Cutting back on highly processed carbohydrates and increasing protein improves levels of blood triglycerides and HDL, and so may reduce your chances of having a heart attack, stroke, or other form of cardiovascular disease. It may also make you feel full longer, and stave off hunger pangs.

30 Fast Facts About Islam
1. Islam (pronounced is-lahm) is the world’s second largest religion, with nearly 1.5 billion followers globally.

2. Indonesia has the world’s largest Muslim population, followed by Pakistan, Bangladesh, India, Turkey, Iran, Egypt, Nigeria, China, and Algeria.

3. In both India and China, Muslims are large minorities among other religions.

4. Like Christianity and Judaism, Islam was founded in the Middle East.

5.  Islam’s message was preached by the Prophet Muhammad in the 7th century as a continuation of the monotheistic tradition taught by Abraham, Moses and Jesus.  Muslims worship the same god that Christians and Jews worship. According to Islamic belief, Muhammad was God’s last prophet and messenger to humanity.

6. A central principle of the Islamic faith is respect for all religions, based on the belief that humankind universally worships the same God.

7. The word “Allah” is Arabic for God.  The word Islam comes from “salaam,” which literally means “peace,” Islam encourages Muslims to live a life guided by equity, kindness, honesty, charity, reflection, respect and humility.

8. A Muslim (pronounced muhs-lim) is a person who submits to God and follows the teachings of Islam as found in the Holy Qur’an, which Muslims consider to be the book of divine revelation of “the Word of God.”

9. Many people confuse the terms “Muslim” and “Arab,” although they have different meanings. A Muslim refers to someone who follows the teachings of Islam.  An Arab refers to a person of Arab heritage who speaks Arabic. Approximately 10% of the Arab world is not Muslim, and the majority of Muslims are not Arab.  In fact, Arabs make up less that 20% of the world’s Muslim Population.

10. According to the Qur’an, there are five pillars, or central guiding principles, of Islam that Muslims must uphold.  Briefly, they are:Shahada(Declaration) ,Salat(Prayer),Zakat( Giving to the Poor),Siyam( Fasting ) and Hajj(Pilgrimage) .

11. The concept of Ramadan is similar to Christianity’s Lent and Judaism’s Day of Atonement.

12. The two main branches of Islam are Sunni and Shia.

13. Both Sunni and Shia Muslims follow the Qur’an and the reported sayings and deeds of the Prophet Muhammad, referred to as the Hadith.

14. Like Catholics and Protestants, Shia and Sunni Muslims share common core beliefs, but differ on key points of interpretation.

15. The main difference between the Sunni and the Shia dates to the beginning of Islam, when a dispute over the succession to the Prophet Muhammad split the religion into two sects.

16. Followers of Islam, called Muslims, commit their lives to truthfulness, good works,  charity, harmony, neighborliness, almsgiving, acceptance of religious pluralism, and diversity.

17. Muslims believe the Qur’an is God’s word as revealed through the Prophet Muhammad.

18. Arabic is a language spoken throughout the world. Not every speaker of Arabic is an Arab, just like not every speaker of English is an Englishman.

19. What are the articles of faith (Islamic values)?
a. sanctity of life
b. sanctity of religious freedom
c. sanctity of mind and intellect
d. sanctity of property and wealth
e. sanctity of personal honor

20.  One of the most characteristic- and stirringly evocative- symbols of Islam is the  adhan, the Arabic call to prayer, dramatically intoned by a muezzin from high atop a lofty minaret.

21. Islam’s first muezzin was Bilal Ibn Rabah, an Ethiopian, who also was one of the first to accept the religion. He was a slave by Ummayya Ibn Khalaf who treated him cruelly. Bilal was bought and freed by Abu Bakr, later the most distinguished of the Prophet’s Companions and the first Caliph after Muhammad’s death.

22. Strictly speaking, the only holidays, which are considered “religious”, are Ramadan,  Eid Al-Fitr  and Eid Al-Adha.

23. The holidays of  Laylat Al-Isra wa Al-Miraj (The night journey and ascension) and  Laylat Al-Qadr (the night of power) are celebrated in various ways throughout the Muslim world, while the Prophet’s birthday, Mawlud Al-Nabi is celebrated according to local custom in some regions and not in others. Many Muslims would respond: ”We do not celebrate the Prophet’s birthday. He was after all, just a man.”

24. Of the Muslim year, Ramadan, the ninth month, is the holiest, for it is the month in which the Quran was revealed for the guidance of mankind.“ The month of Ramadan is not only a month of”moral abstinence,“ it also has the social virtue of creating new bonds of understanding between all classes of people.

25.  The fast, practiced by the rich and the poor alike, reminds the more fortunate members of society of the pangs of hunger which the poor suffer. It is a month of seclusion, generosity and charity. Ramadan is also a joyful month. The daily fast is broken at sunset with a meal called  iftar. Two hours before sunrise, Muslims have an early light meal called suhur.

26. The Muslim year is a sequence of 12 lunar months totaling 354 days, so that 33 Muslim years equal about 32 solar years. Consequently, the month of Ramadan sometimes falls in the heat of the summer months, making the burden of the fast heavier and perhaps the sense of fulfillment greater.

27. Abu Bakr Muhammad al-Razi (865-925) has been called "the unchallenged chief physician of the Muslims."

28. In the five daily prayers, Muslims face the Kaaba in Mecca, Arabia. It is a cube-shaped stone structure that was originally built by Prophet Adam and later rebuilt by Prophet Abraham. Muslims believe that the Kaaba was the first house of worship on Earth dedicated to the worship of one god. Muslims do not worship the Kaaba. It serves as a central focal point for Muslims around the world, unifying them in worship and symbolizing their common belief, spiritual focus and direction. Interestingly, the inside of the Kaaba is empty.

29. The hajj is a simultaneous pilgrimage to the Kaaba made by millions of Muslims each year. It is performed to commemorate the struggles of Abraham, Ishmael and Hagar in submitting their wills to God.

30. Islam is a complete way of life that governs all facets of life: moral, spiritual, social, political, economical, intellectual, etc.

What is a nuclear weapon?

What is a nuclear weapon?
A nuclear weapon is a weapon whose explosive power is generated by the process of nuclear fission (an atomic bomb) or nuclear fusion (a hydrogen or thermonuclear bomb).

How is a nuclear weapon different from a conventional weapon?
In order to create a fission or fusion reaction, a nuclear weapon must use what are commonly called fissile materials, either plutonium or highly enriched uranium (HEU), to fuel its explosion.

A conventional weapon does not use fissile materials as its explosive fuel. As a result, even a nuclear weapon with a relatively small yield is much more destructive than any conventional weapon, with the capability to nearly destroy an entire city.

What happens in a nuclear explosion?
A nuclear explosion is the result of a rapid release of energy from a nuclear reaction, either
fission or fusion. The result is an enormous blast of energy and thermal radiation.

Nuclear Fission: In a nuclear fission reaction, the nucleus of an atom is split into two smaller nuclei and other by-product particles. If this process is uncontrolled, as in a nuclear weapon, it starts a chain reaction whereby large amounts of energy are rapidly released .Nuclear fission is the type of nuclear reaction that was used in the atomic bombs the United States dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during WWII.

Nuclear Fusion: Whereas an atom is split in the process of nuclear fission, in a nuclear fusion reaction many nuclei come together to form one heavier nucleus, causing the release of great amounts of energy in self-sustaining reactions.Thermonuclear weapons involve both fission and fusion.

What is a kiloton? A megaton?
Kilotons (kt): a unit of measuring the explosive power of a nuclear explosion. This measurement is in relation to the explosive power of an equivalent amount of TNT.  For example, a 15kt nuclear explosion (the size of the explosion in Hiroshima) has the explosive power equivalent to 15,000 tons of TNT.

Megatons (Mt): Also in relation to the explosive power of an equivalent amount of TNT, a megaton is the explosive power equivalent to 1 million tons of TNT, or 1,000 kilotons. This level of power can only be obtained through a thermonuclear or hydrogen blast.

If you wanted to picture the amount of TNT needed for a 1-Megaton explosion, imagine a 200-mile long train filled with TNT; for a 5-Mt bomb, a train 1000 miles long.

The Beatles were one of the most creative musical groups in the history of Rock and Roll.  During the period that the Beatles played together as a band they made five films in addition to their voluminous output of original music.

Rooted in skiffle and 1950s rock and roll, the group later worked in many genres ranging from pop ballads to psychedelic rock, often incorporating classical and other elements in innovative ways. Their enormous popularity first emerged as "Beatlemania"; as their songwriting grew in sophistication, by the late 1960s they came to be perceived by many fans and cultural observers as an embodiment of the ideals shared by the era's sociocultural revolutions.
